Police: Choking man coughed up cocaine packets
As police officers brought Terrance Haynes into the Sixth Precinct in Coram Tuesday night on a charge of marijuana possession, he had trouble speaking, then breathing. Then, Haynes turned blue.
Police gave him the Heimlich maneuver. "Then out pops the bag," said Lt. Robert VanZeyl, of the Suffolk Police Department.
The bag was a plastic baggy that contained 11 little paper packets of cocaine, with each probably containing a half-ounce to an ounce of the drug, police said.
The officers may have saved the suspect's life, but in doing so, they may have increased his possible time behind bars from 3 months in jail to 25 yea...

Incumbent mayor runs unopposed — and loses
An election experience
James Neville achieved a rarity in American politics on Tuesday night. He ran unopposed for a third term as mayor in a North Hempstead village, and lost.
He is the first to admit that he let his guard down.
"I got lazy," he said.
Running with the Unity Party in the tiny North Hempstead village of Baxter Estates, Neville shrugged off campaigning. A two-term village mayor, Neville, 51, came to office in March 2001, edging out challenger and two-term trustee John Maher by two votes.
By the time the short flurry of votes were tallied Tuesday night, Maher, a small-business investo...

Police: Woman Sets Dog On Fire, Accidentally Kills Kids
PITTSBURGH -- Investigators in Pittsburgh say they have solved a nearly 15-year-old case in which a woman and her friend allegedly set the family dog on fire because the woman's mother wouldn't get rid of it.
The dog, in turn, wound up setting the house on fire, killing the woman's two toddlers.
Cold-case detectives haven't said exactly what broke the case against the mother, 34-year-old Tequilla Newsome, and her friend, 29-year-old Lachan Russell. Russell was 15 at the time.
Cmdr. Maurita Bryant said the detectives reinterviewed about 20 witnesses in the case and at least one offered more details in recent weeks, after...
